To celebrate new releases from Colin Will, Nikki Magennis, and William Bonar, an evening of recitals is presented by Sheila Wakefield (of leading independent poetry publisher, Red Squirrel Press).

Colin Will was born in Edinburgh, and now resides in Dunbar. Colin is a former Makar to the Federation of Writers (Scotland), and Poet Partner to Moray. Colin operates Calder Wood Press, which specialises in poetry pamphlets.

Nikki Magennis is an artist and writer. She authored for ten years, publishing two erotic novels and dozens of short stories; after her children, Nikki focused on poetry writing. Jo Bell describes her work as evoking ‘a feminised history with dirt under its nails’, and she attempts to explore large themes via the minutiae of life. In 2013, Nikki’s poetry won both the James Kirkup Competition and the William Soutar Prize. Her poems can be found in Gutter 9 and 10, Poetry Scotland, Iota, and The Poetry of Sex. As winner of the James Kirkup Competition, Nikki saw publication of her poetry pamphlet: Meeting Buddha in Dumbarton (2014).

William Bonar grew up in Port Glasgow, and lived in Edinburgh for many years, before settling in Glasgow city in 1988. William’s pamphlet, Frostburn Steel, was published in 2004 by Dreadful Night Press; his poems have been published in a variety of newspapers, magazines, and anthologies. William gained an MLitt in Creative Writing (with Distinction) at Glasgow University in 2008, and won the Jura Malt Whisky Prize at the Words Exhibition in the Mitchell Library during the same year. He was a participant of the Clydebuilt Mentoring Scheme (2009-10) under the tutelage of Liz Lochhead, and a sequence of seven sonnets by the Clydebuilt cohort appears in the North Light anthology (Dreadful Night Press, 2012). William’s poem, Visiting Winter: A Johannesburg Quintet (originally published in Gutter 06), was chosen for the Scottish Poetry Library’s online anthology: The Best Scottish Poems of 2012. He is the recipient of the James Kirkup Memorial Poetry Prize for 2014, and his winning manuscript will be published by Red Squirrel Press in Spring 2015.

This is a free event, open to all.
