Attendees will bring their assignments from the previous week, and learn how to criticise work in a group setting. Instruction will also be offered on how to edit and re-arrange a poem’s structure, with special emphasis placed on considering free-verse line breaks. The first session having focused on labour/narrative poetry, Glasgow author Brian Whittingham will show attendees how to read, criticise, and edit their work.

Brian is the author of five poetry collections, the most recent including Clocking In and Clocking Out (pieces about the workplace), an accompanying writing workshop manual – People Who Work Standing Up (about the building of the QE2), and Septimus Pitt (poems and illustrations for children). He has written five plays: Diamonds in Bedlam, The Devil’s Dandruff, Three Nights and A Sunday, and Come Oan Get Aff. Amongst Brian’s published short fiction is The Father Who Bought Fear (which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in 2012) and The Charing Cross Carpet (which won the Sunday Herald Christmas Short Story Competition, 2000). Brian has held residencies in New York, at Yaddo Artist’s Colony (1994), in Lithuania (2006), and in Grez, France (with an RLS fellowship, in 2008). Brian has also served as a Writing Fellow in East and Mid Lothian.

He has read his work on BBC radio and television; Brian has also pariticpated in literary festivals including Bumbershoot and The Burning Word. Past editor of West Coast Magazine, Nerve Magazine, and New Writing Scotland, Brian presently works as a creative writing lecturer at The City of Glasgow College.

Tickets: £6 (£3 for concessions). Free to SWC members.
