CCA Clubroom, Glasgow.

Turning to the Page: Writing Class by Chiew-Siah Tei

ChiewSiahTei

Chiew-Siah Tei
holds a PhD in Creative Writing and Film Studies from the University of Glasgow. Her work ranges over fiction and drama. Chiew’s first book, Little Hut of Leaping Fishes (Picador, 2008), was listed for the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Best Scottish Fiction Prize; the title won Malaysia’s Readers’ Choice Award.

Don’t worry if you missed parts one, two, and three; writers of all levels can benefit from Chiew’s perspective on the art, and her practical approach allows for useful feedback and audience discussion. The fourth and concluding part of her series promises to bring together the tips and techniques learned earlier, culminating in fun and beneficial exercises.

This short course introduces aspiring writers to the principles of the craft, examining key aspects of imaginative writing (character creation, narrative structures, etc.) and encouraging participants to develop their own ideas and voice. The workshops also require participants to write in a variety of genres, developing ideas from one genre and applying these in another. You may drop in to any session which suits your particular needs.

Part 4: What’s Happening? – Plotting and Structure

We will explore narrative structure, and how to arrange events with causal relationships in a meaningful sequence.

Tickets: £6 (£3 for SWC members and concessions). This is the last of four sessions.
