James Robertson
will talk about the art of writing full-length fiction, describing how characters, plots, themes, and writing styles evolve in the creation of his novels. He will give examples from different drafts of his work, explain why each book has its own specific challenges, and open up the discussion to the audience.

James is a poet, novelist, short story writer, and editor. He grew up in Bridge of Allan, studied history at Edinburgh University, and worked in publishing and bookselling before becoming a full-time writer. He writes for both adults and children, and is the editor of Itchy Coo (the Scots language imprint for young readers) – for which he has just translated The Gruffalo.

His four novels are The Fanatic, Joseph Knight (awarded the Saltire Book of the Year and Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year prizes), The Testament of Gideon Mack (long-listed for the Man Booker Prize), and And the Land Lay Still (also awarded the Saltire Book of the Year prize). His most recent title is Republics of the Mind: New and Selected Stories. 2013 will see the publication of his fifth book, The Professor of Truth. James currently resides in Angus.

This event will be of interest to both readers and writers (whether published or unpublished). “In Process” has been brought & funded by the Scottish Writers’ Centre with help from The Scottish Book Trust, Anita Govan (Stirling’s Makar), and Stirling Libraries.
