Ready to blow away the January cobwebs? Want to learn how to write seriously, and hone your craft alongside like-minded individuals? Or maybe your writing is in need of fresh inspiration and impetus – do you feel that you would benefit from looking at things in a whole new way? You’ll always find a friendly reception at the SWC, in the comfortable surroundings of the CCA complex (complete with book shop and cafe bars). Drop by and give us a try!

Chiew-Siah Tei holds a PhD in Creative Writing and Film Studies from the University of Glasgow. Her work ranges over fiction and drama. Chiew’s first book, Little Hut of Leaping Fishes (Picador, 2008), was listed for the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Best Scottish Fiction Prize; the title won Malaysia’s Readers’ Choice Award.

This short course introduces aspiring writers to the principles of the craft, examining key aspects of imaginative writing (character creation, narrative structures, etc.) and encouraging participants to develop their own ideas and voice. The workshops also require participants to write in a variety of genres, developing ideas from one genre and applying these in another. You may drop in to any session which suits your particular needs.

Session 1: What Makes You a Writer?

We will look at observational skill as an important tool for a writer, with emphasis on attention to details and sensory perceptions.

Tickets: £6 (£3 for SWC members and concessions). This is the first of four sessions.
