Bernard MacLaverty

Last night’s “Novel to Film” event, by Bernard MacLaverty, was a fascinating experience. At the CCA Cinema, Bernard showcased scenes from the films Cal, Lamb, and My Dear Palestrina. He compared these with the texts of his original novels and screenplays, demonstrating the many limitations and opportunities which traversing different media offers.

Most affecting of all, perhaps, was the event’s conclusion – a screening of the entire short film, Bye-Child (inspired by a Seamus Heaney poem). This harrowing yet ultimately uplifting work demonstrated, pointedly, Bernard’s formidable talents as a director as well as a screenwriter. Much was to be learned in the question-and-answer session, afterwards.

An evening with one of our greatest contemporary writers. Thanks to everyone who came along, to support the SWC and its curation of our inestimable literary culture.
